It's time for National Fire Prevention Week!  This year's campaign for fire safety awareness is October 3-9, 2021.  National Fire Prevention Week features a yearly theme, designed to draw attention to a particular aspect of fire awareness and education.  The 2021 theme is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety."

You've surely heard the periodic chirp of a smoke detector with a low battery, but what do you do when it happens?  Do you replace it immediately, or do you tune it out?  If you ignore the chirp, stop!  Smoke detectors are an absolutely crucial part of fire safety.  Replace the batteries when they get low, and every 10 years, replace your smoke detectors entirely.  Pro tip:  Label both the smoke detector and the battery with the date of installation so you don't forget!

While smoke detectors are incredibly important, there are other alert systems available for households which include someone who is deaf or hard of hearing.  Some options include strobe lights and pillow or bed shakers.  Make sure whatever you choose is lab tested for safety!
