Dorm Cleanups in Oxford, MS
4/8/2022 (Permalink)
We'll make it "Like it never even happened."
The end of the semester will be here before you know it. Do you have a son or daughter in campus housing? Finals will be here soon, and the deadline for checking out of their rooms is within 24 hours of their last final exam. Their rooms need to be clean at checkout, or the school will assess charges to their account. You know how that goes in most cases -- you wind up with the bill.
Your student should have received a Room Condition Report at move-in. This is what will be used to assess damages to the rooms and the resulting fees.
Final exams for the Spring semester are May 2-6, 2022. Your student has hopefully started preparing for finals, but it's easy for the room cleanup to get lost in the chaos of it all. The student is expected to thoroughly clean the room, wipe down all of the furniture and appliances, wipe down the closets, window sills and blinds. Mirrors and windows need to be cleaned, and the room needs to be swept and mopped. If the room is left unclean or unsanitary, including the furniture, the school will not consider that as normal wear and tear. It will be classified as damaged and fines will be assessed. The same goes for large marks on the walls beyond scuffs. The most recent fee listing for an unclean room assesses a minimum fee of $25 per bag of trash removed. That could add up very quickly!
What if there was another way? Leave the cleaning to us! SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale is always here to help. Give us a call at 662-281-1881. We would be happy to discuss your needs and come up with a plan to get your student's room back up to school standards. Your child could study for their final exams and prepare to move out in peace.
Living on campus can be wild. We'll help make the mess "Like it never even happened."
My Oxford, MS House Smells Like Nicotine!
2/23/2022 (Permalink)
Treat left-behind nicotine and tar before moving in, or it will almost certainly return!
Photographs tell a story, but sometimes the story leaves out a few details. This is especially true with the current real estate market. Properties are often snapped up based solely off the listing photos. What a surprise when the new homeowner gets their first good look at what they bought and realizes the former owner must have been a heavy indoor smoker. For decades.
Now what?
The smell left behind after years of heavy smoking isn't something that goes away without assistance, and sometimes it is next to impossible to get all of it out, but there are some things you can do to lessen the severity. No, we don't mean plugging in an air freshener and calling it a day. Before beginning any nicotine cleaning, it's a good idea to have the air ducts cleaned. Air is recirculated throughout a home, so possible years of buildup could be lurking in your ducts.
Once the ducts are clean, the inside needs a thorough scrubbing and encapsulation (sealing). This means that cabinets, vanities, and other hard surfaces need to be cleaned to remove the tar left behind after a smoker leaves. Walls and ceilings should be repainted with a stain-blocking primer after washing the walls with a strong cleaner formulated to combat tar and nicotine. Simply painting over a smoker's walls will not work because stains will eventually bleed through.
It is important to make sure all of the steps are performed, otherwise, the smell will almost definitely return. It can be a bit overwhelming.
Why not make one call and have all of it handled?
SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale has it covered! Air duct cleaning, encapsulation, fogging, and anything else needed to get your new home smoke-free, we've got you. Give us a call to discuss your needs at 662-281-1881.

Crime Scene Cleaning in Clarksdale, MS
2/8/2022 (Permalink)
Should something bad happen, we're always here to help.
Local crime rates are skyrocketing all across the nation. Crimes can happen anywhere, but when it happens at home, it's personal. Once your home has been designated a crime scene, many important decisions have to be made.
Who cleans up the mess?
This generally falls to the homeowner.
People often feel violated after a crime is committed on their property, no matter the size or type of crime that occurred. Someone could easily become overwhelmed at the idea of cleaning and restoring their home after such a traumatic experience.
Additionally, specialized cleaning processes are often required to remove the chemicals left behind after police gather evidence, as is the case with fingerprint powder. Should the crime involve bloodshed, the area must be properly cleaned and sanitized to eliminate any bloodborne pathogens that could transmit infectious diseases.
SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale is a local provider of Crime Scene Cleanup services. Our technicians utilize the proper PPE and are trained in the proper cleaning techniques. We are always sensitive to your needs and strive to quickly and discretely restore your property from the "crime scene" to the place that you call home.
We hope it never happens to you, but should you need a Crime Scene Cleaner at your home, call SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale at 662-281-1881.

Let That Air Flow!
1/31/2022 (Permalink)
There's more to dryer vent maintenance than cleaning off the screen!
There's nothing better than the smell of clean laundry, fresh out of the dryer. The dryer is one of the most-used appliances in a home. Proper maintenance is essential to keep your machine running at peak performance. Not only that, ignoring one of the primary maintenance tasks could cause your dryer – and your home – to go up in flames! The leading cause of dryer fires is a failure to properly clean them. There are close to 3,000 home clothes dryer fires every year, resulting in $35 million in property loss. Keep an eye out for some tell-tale signs that you need to level up your dryer maintenance game.
Has this ever happened to you? Your dryer worked like a champ until you noticed that sometimes you needed to add more time to the cycle to make sure the clothes were totally dry. You clean off the lint screen every time you finish a load, so maybe the dryer is just aging? Not necessarily. Cleaning the lint screen is the first part of dryer maintenance. Periodically, give it a deep clean and a rinse! Dryer sheets leave behind a residue that can build up and cause an issue. While you're at it, wipe down the inside drum of the dryer with a touch of rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth. Finish it by removing the lint trap screen and using a dryer lint brush to clean out the lint built up inside. It's like a spa day for your dryer!
It's also important to watch the size of your dryer loads. Just because your dryer might claim to have extra capacity, it doesn't mean your college kid should come home and shove two months' worth of clothes into one load! Overfilling your dryer uses more energy and not all of the clothes are likely getting completely dry. That sour, musty smell is never a good look on anyone! Show some restraint and dry regular-sized loads of clothes each time.
Outdoor build-up like dirt, snow and even lawn debris can often affect the vent cover on the exterior of your home. Dryer fires are more prevalent in the fall and winter, so be sure to keep the area clear.
The most important part of dryer maintenance lies within the exhaust vent. At a minimum, your exhaust vent should be completely cleaned every two years. This can be done professionally, but if you're the DIY-type, it's a relatively easy job. Here's how to do it:
Unplug the dryer and detach the vent hose from the wall. Use a screwdriver to unfasten the holding clamps.Carefully remove the vent hose from the dryer and use the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner to suck out the lint. Do both ends of the hose until it's all gone, but be gentle so the hose won't be damaged.Find a clog? A wire hanger can snake out any large clogs. Be careful not to scratch the sides!Reattach your hose with the clamps and slide it back into place.Go outside and remove the exterior vent cover. Wear gloves and clear out the lint.Plug in the machine and run it empty on the air dry setting for 20 minutes. Make sure air is blowing out of the vent before replacing the outside cover. You're done!Make it easy to keep up your dryer's maintenance by scheduling a recurring reminder on your phone!
Don't feel like doing it yourself? Call us for your dryer vent cleaning! Save our number on your phone: 662-281-1881.

Emergencies can be very traumatic. In an emergency situation, time is often of the essence. This is particularly true with water damage. Thermal Imaging
2/8/2021 (Permalink)
Thermal imaging was first developed for military use during the Korean War. This kind of imaging uses temperature to distinguish hot and cold temperatures through walls and long distances. It is used by firefighters to see through smoke and find people; It is also used by law enforcement to locate suspects and handle search and rescue efforts. But those aren’t the only ways it can be effective or helpful.
We use it to locate water trapped within walls or floors. Water damage can create long term issues if not detected soon enough. That’s why it is important to catch the source of the water and correct the problem and dry out any affected materials before it is too late. Thermal imaging may be the solution before one has to take a destructive approach. Although, thermal imaging cannon “see” water, it can detect differences in temperature that could indicate a location to test. This is just one of the reasons why SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale can be of service to you. If you suspect water damage, give us a call at 662-281-1881.
3 Types of Foundations: Pros and Cons
1/5/2021 (Permalink)
The foundation of a structure is the load bearing portion, typically built below ground. This portion serves 3 purposes.
- Support the structure
- Keep out groundwater
- Function as a barrier to water and soil vapor
But, when deciding on the foundation of your home, it’s important to know the pros and cons of each option.
These are the most cost efficient as well as the most common of the choices. The process is simple, the slab starts with concrete footing poured 24 inches below projected finish grade. Then concrete blocks are placed on top of the footers, internal piping is placed, then rock filler is added, and four inches of concrete poured on top.
The advantages of a slab foundation are that they are low maintenance and the least expensive option. The disadvantages are that there is a higher potential for expensive repairs because plumbing is placed below the slab. This means if there is a problem, the concrete would have to be broken to reach the issues at hand. Another disadvantage is that a slab foundation has minimal protection from storms and bad weather.
Homes with crawlspace foundations are raised a few feet off the ground. As with slab foundations, footing is placed, and concrete blocks are placed the create the support for the walls.
The advantages of a crawlspace foundation are the easy access for repairs to plumbing, electrical, piping, and ductwork. A second advantage is warmer floors. Because the floor is elevated and the underlying space is conditioned, the floors tend to be much warmer than a concrete slab. The disadvantages are that crawlspaces are prone to moisture. It is important to keep an eye on your crawlspace to ensure you have proper insulation and ventilation. Even with cutting edge vapor barriers there can still be potential for mold and fungi to grow due to increased moisture. A second disadvantage is there is, like with slab foundations, little to no protection from storm and weather.
A basement is an eight-foot hole that ends in a concrete slab. In the past, basements were built with cinder blocks, but they were prone to structural failures and leaks over time. Nowadays, basements are built with poured concrete walls, which have improved the structural integrity on the foundation over time.
The advantages of a basement foundation are the extended square footage, easy access for repairs, and storm protection. Having the additional space at a much lower cost per square foot than other parts of the house can create extra living space or entertainment. As with crawlspace foundations, there is easy access for repairs. However, unlike slab and crawlspace foundations, there is protection from storms and weather for you and the residents of the home. The disadvantages of a basement foundation are increased costs. Because of the added materials, labor, and square footage, the costs on installation are the most time consuming and expensive. Another disadvantage is lack of natural light. Because the foundation is underground, there are no possible options for windows, unless you create a walkout.
Ultimately, the decision on which foundation you choose is personal preference. There is no foundation type that “holds up” better than another. However, if you do experience flooding or mold issues in your Oxford, MS home, give SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale a call at 662-281-1881!!

Here For Our Community
6/3/2020 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale we love giving back to our communities. Due to the CDC’s recommendations of cleaning and sanitizing high touch areas we decided to give back to our Oxford and Batesville communities by proactively cleaning the vehicles of our first responders. We reached out to the police chief of the Oxford Police Department, Batesville Police Department, University Police Department, and the Chief of the Oxford Fire Station and they gladly accepted our offer. So, we set up a time to clean the squad cars and fire engines. We used our ULV fogging machines to distribute the disinfectant, then followed up with a wipe down of high touch areas such as the steering wheel, door handles, and radios.
We appreciate their service during this unprecedented time, and it was a great way to help them so they can continue to serve and protect the citizens of our communities.

Why you should have your HVAC system cleaned
2/21/2019 (Permalink)
Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Did you know that your HVAC system is the lungs of your home? It takes air in and breathes air out, circulating air and contaminates 5 to 7 times a day, on average.
Some of these contaminants are:
- Dust and dander
- Pollen
- Odors
- Dirt and Debris
- Other contaminants
These contaminants can be harmful to all occupants, but some may be more sensitive than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers as well as elderly and young children could be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor quality that air duct cleaning can help address.
Another reason to have your heating and cooling system cleaned is for energy savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants cause the systems to work harder and shorten the life of your system. When the HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire.

Giving Back
2/19/2019 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale we love giving back to our community year-round, but especially during the holidays. This past Christmas our marketing team volunteered for the Salvation Army and rang the bell at our local Wal-Mart. They were able to spread holiday cheer and help families in need by accepting donations from passing patrons.
But, one of our favorite ways to give back is giving back to those whom have served our country. We have several employees that sacrificed their lives for our freedom, so this cause is near and dear to our hearts. We reached out to the personnel at the Veterans Home and asked what their residents would like to receive. Turns out they needed long sleeve t-shirts. So, our marketing team ventured out and purchased around 20 t-shirts and wrapped them all individually. It was such a blessing to be able to give back and support our local veterans.
