Tips for Securing Your Business During a Flood | SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale
8/1/2024 (Permalink)
Don’t let flooding slow down your business! Our team at SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale is ready to help at a moments notice.
Floods may seem like something that will never happen to you at work, but that’s not true! Flash floods can happen at any point, either due to weather emergencies or manmade disasters like burst water mains or busted pipes.
No matter how it happens, floods can create serious issues for your building and can cause extensive damage in just a few minutes. Knowing what to do if you suffer a flood can help you stay in control and avoid more serious damage.
Navigating Flash Floods
Flash floods can occur due to multiple different situations. Heavy rain can overwhelm dry ground during a drought, a nearby river or lake could overflow and even something as serious as a dam or levee breaking can cause a flash flood warning to be issued.
If you have the time, prepare your outside space as quickly as possible. Bring chairs and signage inside and tie down tables or anything that could be swept away by quickly moving water.
Keep everyone inside for the time being, and offer your lobby up as a safe sheltering location for any passersby caught in the deluge. Flash floods can be dangerous or even deadly with just a few inches of quickly moving water. Keep all windows and doors closed and wait out the situation in a dry location. If the water starts to infiltrate your building, stay calm and keep everyone out of the area as floodwater can be dangerous or hazardous to walk through.
Manmade Floods
Manmade floods are harder to predict because they usually occur due to an accident or unexpected situation. Broken pipes, clogged drains and busted water lines can all cause serious water leaks that get out of hand in a short amount of time. If you aren’t at work when the accident occurs, you could be dealing with a seriously flooded basement or space.
If you can tell where the water leak started, move quickly to shut off the water valve that is controlling the flow of water. If you can’t quickly figure out where the water is coming from, turn off the main water line to the entire building just to be on the safe side. Avoid walking through the water, as gray or black water lines can dump really dangerous water onto your floor.
Recovering After the Flood
Depending on how badly your building flooded, you could be dealing with some pretty deep water and significant structural damage. Walk carefully around your property and take as many pictures as possible. Fresh images of the situation will help make your insurance claim go smoother.
Call us right away so we can get started on your recovery! Water and flood damage can move quickly, so we make sure to prioritize your restoration from start to finish. We will remove the standing water and tackle hidden moisture, repair and restore your property, and focus on returning your building to its pre-flood condition right away. We are always here for you and your business!
SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale is here to help you recover from floods. Call us day or night.

7/5/2022 (Permalink)
Sometimes the fire doesn't stay in the pan.

Restaurant Cleanings for Your Oxford, MS Establishment
7/7/2021 (Permalink)
Table for 2? This Oxford, MS restaurant received an "A" during their last inspection.
Restaurants dot the landscape in Oxford, MS. From national chains to mom and pop diners, they're everywhere you look. Sure, the food is good, but what would you see if you went inside the kitchen? You could be surprised.
A restaurant should be regularly cleaned and disinfected. A clean and sanitized kitchen reduces the spread of disease and illness among the kitchen staff, leading to fewer call-outs and sick days. Not only that, a commercial kitchen can easily become a fire hazard if the grease traps are not regularly cleaned.
The State of Mississippi has extensive regulations for the operation of restaurants, including those that are mobile. Restaurants are also subject to frequent inspections from the Mississippi Department of Health. The inspections are given a letter grade of A, B, or C. Should a restaurant pose an immediate health threat, it is shut down until it is up to code and safe to reopen.
In theory, all restaurants should remain completely up to code at all times. In reality, it doesn't always happen. Restaurants get busy and some of the required deep cleanings are put off until a later date, then an even later date, then it never happens at all. That could spell trouble if the restaurant is subject to a surprise inspection by the health department!
Don't let that happen to you. Let the trained professionals at SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale help! We offer restaurant deep cleanings that will leave you breathing a sigh of relief. We can deep clean both the kitchen and the front-of-house. Don't leave it to chance. Give us a call today at 662-281-1881 to discuss your restaurant's needs.

Commercial Sewage Loss at Oxford, MS School
10/21/2020 (Permalink)
Sewage losses can be caused by many things like backed up sewer lines or infiltration of tree roots. Whatever the cause, the damage can be messy and should not be addressed as a basic cleaning. Sewage waste can be extremely hazardous and needs the attention of professionals.
Recently we were called out to a local school here in Oxford, MS. The sewage line had become clogged and waste was coming up through the drains in the bathrooms and seeping into classrooms and offices. We had first responders arrive immediately to assess the damage so the crews could load up and get there quickly. Thankfully, the contractors had built the walls to where there was a gap in between the sheet rock and the floor. This saved the school from having category 3 water affecting the walls which made cleanup much easier. Our team extracted all the standing water and waste and treated the floors with antimicrobial and disinfecting agents. Because of the quick response we were able to get the areas cleaned up so the students could return to a safe clean environment the next day!
So, if you experience a sewage loss in your commercial building contact SERVPRO of Oxford/Batesville/Clarksdale at 662-281-1881.
Dealing with Water Damage Caused by Fire Sprinklers
10/12/2020 (Permalink)
Fire sprinklers are an excellent way to protect your home or office from a fire, however, malfunctions or accidental discharges can also leave behind a lot of damage. One of these accidents could be caused by:
- a nearby heat source such as an engine or candle
- a sudden freeze followed by a thaw
- corrosion within the sprinkler (make sure to have your sprinklers inspected regularly to prevent this)
An accidental discharge will most likely be an easy cleanup, but it is important to take care of it early. If the sprinklers are cut off soon after they begin discharging, the mess can be dried up using some towels and a mop. However, if the sprinklers are not turned off right away, the problem becomes much larger and will likely require the services of a professional water remediation company. After an inspection and assessment of the property, the team will get to work on water extraction and removal using state-of-the-art equipment and proven methods. The next step of the restoration process is drying and ventilating the soaked area. This will prevent further damage and mold growth. Here at SERVPRO we have unique equipment to make the drying process as quick as possible.

Commercial Mold Remediation
8/19/2020 (Permalink)
Mold growth in a working environment can cause serious health effects for both employees and customers. Once colonization is discovered, containment strategies are critical to prevent cross-contamination where foot traffic and exposed individuals could transfer mold spores to other areas of the building. There are two important containment strategies to consider when mold is found in your business:
- Containment Barriers: one of the most effective methods for keeping employees and customers out of contaminated areas is to establish physical barriers with thick poly sheeting. These temporary plastic walls will maximize the efficiency of drying and deodorization. If needed, we can even remove furniture and unaffected devices from this containment zone before sealing it off from the rest of the building/office.
- Limiting Air Circulation: mold sports can easily be carried to unaffected areas through a high-powered HVAC system. For effective containment, air circulation must be shut down until remediation has completed.
Mold remediation is a considerable challenge for office buildings. Optimally throughout the cleaning process your business should be able to continue running. Effective containment and speedy remediation techniques by our SERVPRO team can make this possible. Call us at 662-281-1881!

Workplace Emergency Drills
8/29/2019 (Permalink)
Unexpected events such as fires, storms, or floods can cause panic and chaos within a workplace. Conducting drills will help employees learn what to do when a disaster strikes. Having a plan and practicing that plan will ensure that your business is ready for any emergency. Here are 3 tips to help make sure your emergency drills are as effective as possible.
- Conduct Emergency Drills Regularly
The number of drills your company needs to conduct can vary based on the following factors:
- Employee turnover rates
- Employee schedules
- Workplace risk factors
- State laws
- Local municipality laws or codes
- Industry-Specific guidelines
- Keep the Drill Unpredictable
Planned drills, while still helpful, are not nearly as effective as an unscheduled drill. Regular unannounced drills will keep employees on their toes. With this approach, workers are more likely to find the best and safest building exits during a real-life disaster.
- Evaluate Each Drill
It is important to conduct regular drills, but it is also important to have post-drill evaluations. Make sure to look at what worked and where the problem areas are. Make sure to ask employees for their feedback.

So, when they went over to check on everything, there was standing water and mold had began to grow, EVERYWHERE! They called SERVPRO of Oxford / Batesville / Clarksdale and we were on the scene within an hour. We then came up with our plan of action and began the process of mold remediation. Wildrose Kennels' puppies playing with our SERVPRO green ducks.
We spend a lot of our time at SERVPRO of Oxford, Batesville, Clarksdale assisting customers in times of emergency. Whether it’s for a water loss or maybe a fire, it’s usually something unexpected. However, not only are we trained to help in times of unpredicted incidents but we’re also there to help with planned construction and renovations.
This month we had the pleasure of helping a local business prepare their facility for renovations. Wildrose Kennels is a premier breeding and training facility in Oxford, MS. Wildrose specializes in Labradors of British and Irish influence. They pride themselves in their ability to produce a Gentleman’s Gundog. Wildrose describes their training by using what they call The Wildrose Way. It is such a sought after training that people come from all over the country to acquire one of their dogs.
The project we worked with them, concentrated on prepping their puppy house for upcoming renovations. We helped them prepare for the building contractor they had scheduled by taking the puppy house down to its bare structure. This allowed them to be ahead of the game when construction started the following week.
Initially we planned to be there for 5 days but were able to complete the job in 3. The staff there was more than helpful during our time there, even allowing us to spend some quality time with the new puppies. They were also pleased that we were able to complete our portion of their renovation process early so they could get a jump start on upgrade.
If you need help in preparing for a renovation or upgrading a residential or commercial building please call SERVPRO of Oxford, Batesville, Clarksdale at 662-281-1881.
